Extra Credit Paper

2 pages...a response (not a book report) of the book "19 Minutes" by Jodi Piccoult.
I know you don't have time, but if you are a fast reader, 15 extra credit points available to those of you who read "19 Minutes" by Jodi Piccoult (it is at Target)...two page response to its contents before the end of the term. Not a book report, but your views. You have to have actually read the book. Using Amazon reviews etc. will not work. I read it in a few days and I have a baby and am doing my dissertation!

24 Hour Tutoring Available

One opportunity for support is through a new tutoring program made available to Union in the days following the storm. Please be aware that our students now have 24-hour access to the Hundley Center for Academic Enrichment's team of peer tutors through a program called Askonline. To participate, all students must do is log on to
Faculty may also register and use the discussion board element to communicate to their classes, see what kind of questions their students are asking, and know what quality of help their students are receiving.
This $7500 program was donated by Askonline as a means of offering support for our students following the storm. Please encourage your students to take advantage of this new opportunity and feel free to direct any questions or concerns to Cassie Harris (charris@uu.edu).
Note: our current system of person to person tutoring will not change. Students are still welcome to spiral up the stairs to the second floor of the library anytime Mon-Thur 1-8 or Wed 1-5. The Director is also available for more individualized study skills sessions Mon-Fri 9:30-6.

Wednesday is "Partner Work Day"

I am giving you the entire class period on Wednesday to work with your partner on the final project:
Working with a group of other students, you will be asked to choose from a list of videos which seem to have characters that exemplify struggles typical of various life cycle stages. As a group, you will present a systematic analysis of the chosen character(s) in the video and the environmental stressors he/she encounters. You will be expected to draw upon all of the readings we have done (Ashford el al. and journal articles) which explain a person’s learning and development at this life stage. Each student will be graded separately based on his/her contribution to the work.
Hints:
1. You can use clips from the movie as part of your presentation (no Rain Man though!)
2. I would skim the last few chapters of the book to see what else is going to be covered and needs to be part of your presentation. It will avoid cram time later!
An unexcused absence from this work group will result in 5 points deduction from your final grade, plus your partner may not be too happy with you.
#2 Assignment for Work Day
2. make 4 groups (whoever/ whatever)
Answer the question:
When is it okay for Christians to get divorced?
You can use text, online sources, personal experiences or even the bible to make your point. Will discuss/ present when we get back from Spring Break. Controversy is good.

Timeline Paper Due Date Before or After Spring Break
Of course you will enjoy your break more if you turn it in PRIOR to going on break, but if you want to turn it in after, the final cutoff date is March 31, in class.
Doing the timeline graphic is worth 2 extra credit points. It is no longer required. Also, turning it in prior to Spring Break will be worth another extra credit point.

We're Back!

I can't wait to see each and every one of you. It seems like it has been far longer than two weeks!
I am going to go ahead and stick with our online class for Wednesday the 20th...except that now you will have an alternate choice to the journal article readings that is far more enjoyable and may actually help you get a gauge on where you are. We will discuss in class on Monday.
Go ahead and check back into Blackboard and let me know that you understand our plan! (look under "discussions" for the assignments: 1). Mood gym and 2). Brainstorming
:)

"Fear not, for I am with you;
be not dismayed, for I am your God;
I will strengthen you, I will help you,
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
Isaiah 41:13
For I, the Lord your God,
hold your right hand;
it is I who say to you, “Fear not,
I am the one who helps you.”

Great Job on our First Quiz!

EVERYONE got at least one extra credit point, and many of you received two. What a great start to the semester :)
Please post in Blackboard who your partner is...and I will post it here.
Interesting Scientology discussion...we can keep it in mind throughout the semester...passion and fervor vs. dangerous lunatics...how are we seen? Religion and finances...how you raise your children, what your children see, model...a family's religious beliefs will shape so much of the other dimensions of one's life...

Tom Cruise and Jerry O'Connell
Passion is great...but how do these videos reflect on the "zealots" of any religious beliefs?
